Andrea M.’s Off To a Great Start!

andrea-m.jpg

Hi! I started my journey with Elevation Weight Loss in Weirton on March 9, 2018. I was tired, sad and could barely walk up my steps. When I walked into Elevation, everyone made me feel very welcome and comfortable. One of the first questions was did I have a goal weight I wanted to achieve? I figured I had a lot of weight to lose, so for now, I will set a small goal of 50 lbs since I had soooo much to lose! Now, here I am 2 months later and I’m down 43.5 lbs so far.

I’m feeling wonderful at this point and have no intention of stopping at 50 lbs! I have more energy than I had for a long time. Participating in aerobic swim classes and now even starting to attend a trampoline ounce class… I’m looking forward to the next few months to achieve my goal weight and to keep on going further– no stopping me now! Thanks Elevation for giving me that extra little help I needed to start to change my life!

Increase Your Protein Intake to Lose More Weight

Frequently we will have clients come to us with questions regarding how to lose weight more quickly or to continue losing when they have hit a stand-still.  As previously discussed in our article, 7 Tips on How To Break the Weight Loss Plateau, one of the easier options is just to increase your protein consumption.

If your physician has medically cleared you to consume more protein, you may want to replace a 300-400 calories meal with a side of green vegetables and several ounces of very lean meat (turkey breast, chicken breast etc.) OR 2-3 scoops of a lean protein powder.

Look at how slim we are, and we just take pictures with the protein

We have personally taste-tested and reviewed in detail nutritional information on more than half a dozen protein powders.

Our personal top pick is OPTIMUM NUTRITION WHEY PROTEIN
Gold Standard 100% Whey Protein Powder
Double Rich Chocolate or Vanilla flavor
5 Pound for $58 at GNC stores or Amazon.com *

Remy + Optimum Nutrition Whey Protein

When you drink 3 scoops of protein mixed with cold water, you are consuming 360 calories and that has 72 grams protein & 9 grams carbs. This will serve as a meal replacement for your busy schedule and help you get more protein in your diet.

Privacy Matters

This week we have another article of “housekeeping” so please bear with us. We want to take this time to address how we handle the privacy of our patients so as to better protect your sensitive medical information and so that you know what to do if you have questions or concerns regarding your information.

2018-05-06.jpg

MaiLan and Remy take their privacy very seriously.

As it stands, we are bound by HIPAA (the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996) which puts limits in place not only on how we store and handle your information but also whom may have access to said information, but we also have our own policies in place to help provide more peace of mind to our patients.

As many of you know, when we receive a new patient we request a copy of their photo ID in order to ensure that the patient is who they say they are, we then place a copy of this ID in our patient files so that we are always able to confirm identification on follow up visits. In addition to this, we regularly search and provide updates to statewide databases in order to make sure that 1) there is no unknown medical history that could create a risk for our patients, and 2) no one is using our patients’ information to unlawfully obtain and abuse medications.

Lastly, we are not permitted, nor would we want to, discuss our patients with ANYONE outside of our medical staff and the patient themselves, not even to other physicians. If a patient and/or their primary physician (PCP) need us to communicate with a third party, we require that the patient signs a “release form” specifically indicating the scope of such communication. In fact, we will not even confirm that an individual is a patient of ours without such documentation, this is to protect your privacy. Signing such a release does not indicate anything other than your willingness to allow our prescribers to communicate with the person you identify, typically your primary physician, and does not constitute the admission that you are a patient of ours or that you received any medications from our office.

hipaa-patient-privacy

We apologize for the dry nature of this weeks article, however questions have been asked about our policies and we want to express just how fundamentally important it is to us that our patients are protected and receive the best possible medical care.

How to Beat the Winter Blues

Freezing temperatures? Gray skies? Crabby mood? Sound familiar? It may be gloomy on the outside, but it doesn’t have to be so on the inside.

It may be hard to be positive when it’s so dark and depressing outside, but it’s important to keep your mood under control because it can help you avoid everything from depression to weight gain.

Here are some tips to help battle the Winter Blues:

TAKE VITAMIN D SUPPLEMENTS

Sunlight can be in short supply during the winter months and your body doesn’t store vitamin D very well. Getting out in the sun, even in the winter-light, itself can improve your mood.  Grab your shades and enjoy what warmth ypu can, but it doesn’t hurt to supplement some vitamin D3 to make up the difference.

ADD VITAMIN B-12

Winter can make you feel sluggish and tired. Take an oral supplement of Vitamin B12, or better yet one of our time-released Vitamin B12 injections. It’s just the boost your body needs!

NUTRITION

Try to resist fatty, sugary comfort foods.  Highly refined carbs and sugar can wreak havoc on your blood sugar levels, which can leave you feeling cranky.  Some “comfort food” like stews and cooked veggie, however, can double as a healthy pick-me-up, especially if they contain mood-boosting nutrients like Omega-3 fatty acids, complex carbs, protein and B vitamins.  Good nutrition makes a positive difference to your mental health.

EXERCISE

We all feel like hibernating in our house in the winter, but that will only add to your winter blues.  It always seems like we carry around a couple of extra pounds in the winter time because we are less active.  During winter, not only does our energy output and fat decrease, we also have an increased desire to eat.  It’s an emotional need we have to feel warm and nourished.  Exercise will help you burn off extra calories and make you feel less hungry in the long run.

SCHEDULE FUN OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

Skiing, sledding, and walking are great sources of exercise and can be done with family and friends!

The bottom line is that you do not want to succumb to the winter blues. Move, talk, socialize, and most important, don’t get caught in the eating trap with comfort food.

Donna’s Weight Loss Journey from March 10, 2017 to September 2017

Before & After Photos for Donna

Dear Dr. Cooper,

I wanted to share with you my weight loss story which would have never been possible without you and your amazing staff at Elevation Weight Loss of Weirton.

I came to you on a Friday afternoon in March of 2017 (the 10th).  I was so discouraged after having tried everything from Weight Watchers to a personal nutritionist and trainer and spending an amount of money that I do not care to remember.   My weight on March 10, 2017 was 206 pounds.  I was exhausted all of the time, depressed, and very uncomfortable.

On previous programs, I would loose a little bit of weight, even up to 30 /35 pounds and then quicker than I lost the weight, it would come right back.

I decided after speaking with a few people that your program might be a final chance for me.  I was embarrassed with my situation, as a teacher and educated woman, that I could not conquer this weight issue on my own.

I can honestly say that you and your staff made me feel so comfortable and listened to my story with so much compassion and understanding.

I started with the HCG Diet injections.  Within the first weeks I was seeing weight loss.  After two months on injections, I switched to the Diet Medication and I continued to see the pounds drop.

I additionally came in for the B12 injections to help with my inflammation and this was finally a program that was successful for me.

The nutritional guidance that Dr. Cooper and her staff gave to me was invaluable.  Combining the programs medication, nutritional program and the exercise guidance, I was finally in control of my weight.  By mid April I had lost 25 pounds and was down to 178.  By June I was 160 pounds and today I am maintaining at 3 pounds below my goal weight at 142 pounds.   64 pounds and nine (9) inches less in my waist later plus  six (6) months of hard work, dedication and amazing support and I feel fantastic.

I cannot thank you enough for allowing me to be back in control of my life.  I recently traveled to Barcelona, Spain and walked an average of 25 miles each day.   I bicycled along the Mediterranean for two (2) hours and never was even out of breath or tired.  I am enjoying shopping for clothes again and I have regained my confidence.

Thank you doesn’t seem enough for all that you have done for me and my family.  I cannot ever thank you enough.  I continue to visit Elevation for B 12 shots to be sure that I am staying on my maintenance program.  I cannot stress enough that it was a challenge, however, one that was well worth achieving.

If anyone is in the situation that I was in March, I would encourage them to come to Elevation and Dr. Cooper and trust in this program.

Thank you,
Donna

Real Results From A Real Mom

me-2

I started this journey on a whim on May 1st, 2017 weighing 235 pounds. What killed me the most is that I weighed more than when I was pregnant with my twins 19 years ago, and they weighed 7 lbs 5 oz each. I had a hysterectomy in 2005 after which my weight just continued to increase. I have never dieted nor exercised more than walking on a trail. I have a very happy marriage and my husband has never complained about my weight, but I just became comfortable with being so overweight.  To celebrate almost any occasion we would go out to dinner, which was a large part of the problem.

I was very nervous going into my first appointment at the Elevation Medical Weight Loss clinic but the doctor was very understanding and gave me a plan.  This has became more than a just diet, but a new way of life. I now look at EVERY single label, whereas before I never even glanced at food labels.  I couldn’t believe the amount of calories and carbs in some of the drinks and foods I was consuming every day.

At my first appointment I rattled off a goal weight number, which I never really expected to see. Now, here I am on Sept 21st, 2017, just 4 and 1/2 months later and I have reached my goal weight of 180 pounds. I have lost 7 inches from around my waist, and can now fit into regular size clothing instead of plus size.  When I take selfies with my friends, I can hold the phone down instead of way up in the air to get a slimmer angle. I can now walk flights of stairs that before left me completely out of breath, I even stepped outside of my comfort zone and started beat boxing with friends and actually love doing it!  If I can do this and make it work, anyone can.   I not only did this for myself but for our 4 sons, since I have found that a healthy mom is a happy mom. We still celebrate by going out to dinner, only now I am much more conscious of my choices and my order has far fewer calories and carbs.
