The Skin-ny on Dry Skin

Spring can be a great time to restore your dry winter skin.  Your skin is the largest organ of the body but it is made up of many tiny cells that consist mostly of water.  During the winter, when the air is dry and salt is on the roads, the water is depleted from our skin cells which cause our skin to be dry, tight, itchy and flakey, which can sometimes lead to wrinkles down the road.

Every minute, we shed about 30-40 thousand dead cells off the surface of our skin, more if your skin is especially dry.  In just the time it took you to read this, you’ve shed about 20,000 skin cells.  So what can we do to help?  Drink water, and lots of it!

Do you wonder why it seems like drinking water is at the root of every diet, workout and skin regime? That’s because it works! Your organs need it to function. For the most part, the more water you drink, the easier it will be to keep your skin healthy, retain elasticity, and help fight signs of aging, not to mention it is great for your weight loss plan!

In the winter, we tend to put on heavy creams and ointments to help fight off the damages caused by the winter wind. Spring, however, means lighter lotions, specifically those with some SPF.   Keep an eye out for products that double as moisturizers and UV barriers to protect the skin.  Sunflower oil and Vitamin E work as emollients that trap moisturizers inside the skin cells and keep them hydrated.  Alpha hydroxy and beta hydroxy also help replenish dry skin.  Glycolic Acid is also great to remove dead skin cells that can leave you with glowing skin.

Following these tips are a sure way to get healthy and replenished skin!
