Giving Back to Our Community


We would like to take a moment to thank our community for providing us the opportunity to reach out to others and make positive changes in their lives. In an effort to give back, we would like to support our community by starting a program that will donate to various local charities every month.

Stay Healthy this Winter


Immunity is winter’s magic word.  When temperatures drop and windows and doors stay shut, viruses can fester.  If your immune system is down, you’re more likely to catch the latest bug which means less energy and generally feeling awful.  Winter germs are lurking everywhere so use some of these useful tips to avoid illness this winter.

-Getting the flu shot before the winter season starts can reduce your risk of illness by 50-60%. Family physicians, health departments, and even your local pharmacies offer them, often for free.
-Research has shown vitamin C to be one of the most powerful immune boosting vitamins available. This water-soluble vitamin can be found in oranges, orange juice, broccoli and in other fruits and vegetables as well as in high-quality multi-vitamins. Chewable or liquid vitamin C is also available in most health food stores. Ester C (a unique form of vitamin C that is buffered with calcium to increase absorption) is also available in several multi-vitamins or as a single supplement.

-Buy plenty of hand sanitizer.  Using sanitizer can reduce your exposure to germs immensely.  Try to find one that has at least 60% alcohol, or make your own by using this recipe:

  • 3 oz. filtered water
  • 1 tsp aloe vera gel
  • 10 drops cinnamon essential oil
  • 10 drops clove essential oil
  • 10 drops rosemary essential oil
  • 10 drops eucalyptus essential oil
  • 20 drops lemon essential oil

Mix ingredients in a 4 oz spray dispenser and shake gently. Spray into hands 3-5 sprays and massage for 5-10 seconds.

-Drink lots and lots of water. Eight to 10 glasses a day is recommended, especially during the winter (though our doctor would prefer you drink more like 15 glasses). You’ll feel loads better when you are hydrated and if you have already gotten a cold, keeping hydrated has been shown to be an important part of the illness battle.

-Avoid overdoing it on refined flours or sugars. Too much white sugar and flour will not only contribute to weight gain, but can also crash your immune system.

-Staying active will help promote bone and muscle health, control weight, and improve sleep patterns, leading to an overall healthier lifestyle throughout the year. And the stronger you are in general, the stronger your body will be to fight off illnesses – or recover in case you get sick despite your best efforts to avoid it.

-Wash hands…..a LOT.

Freezing temperatures? Gray skies? Crabby mood? Sound familiar? It may be gloomy on the outside, but it doesn’t have to be so on the inside.

It may be hard to be positive when it’s so dark and depressing outside, but it’s important to keep your mood under control because it can help you avoid everything from depression to weight gain.

Here are some tips to help battle the Winter Blues:


Sunlight can be in short supply during the winter months and your body doesn’t store vitamin D very well. Getting out in the sun, even in the winter-light, itself can improve your mood.  Grab your shades and enjoy what warmth ypu can, but it doesn’t hurt to supplement some vitamin D3 to make up the difference.


Winter can make you feel sluggish and tired. Take an oral supplement of Vitamin B12, or better yet one of our time-released Vitamin B12 injections. It’s just the boost your body needs!


Try to resist fatty, sugary comfort foods.  Highly refined carbs and sugar can wreak havoc on your blood sugar levels, which can leave you feeling cranky.  Some “comfort food” like stews and cooked veggie, however, can double as a healthy pick-me-up, especially if they contain mood-boosting nutrients like Omega-3 fatty acids, complex carbs, protein and B vitamins.  Good nutrition makes a positive difference to your mental health.


We all feel like hibernating in our house in the winter, but that will only add to your winter blues.  It always seems like we carry around a couple of extra pounds in the winter time because we are less active.  During winter, not only does our energy output and fat decrease, we also have an increased desire to eat.  It’s an emotional need we have to feel warm and nourished.  Exercise will help you burn off extra calories and make you feel less hungry in the long run.


Skiing, sledding, and walking are great sources of exercise and can be done with family and friends!

The bottom line is that you do not want to succumb to the winter blues. Move, talk, socialize, and most important, don’t get caught in the eating trap with comfort food.

When you decide to live a healthier lifestyle and talk to us about wanting to lose weight,   we discuss the nutritional aspect of the types of foods in order to help you choose a weight loss program to fit your goals.  We further recommend that you set a plan for your meals as a way to more easily stay on task and get to your goals.

One aspect of dieting that we would like to emphasize is setting aside a day to plan ahead for your week’s meals.   This includes getting groceries for the week (preferably) from the list of foods that we recommend), prepping the necessary items to make the meals, and cooking ALL of the food needed for the week. If you have 12 containers, you can lay it all out and partition each meal in each container.  Since we often recommend eating 2 large meals a day, you can plan ahead for the other 6 days of the week.

The 9 days meal plan that we prescribed consists of larger meal portions.  Depending on if you are taking the diet medications (phentermine, or Adipex) for weight loss, your caloric goal may be 800-1300 calories a day split into 2 large meals.  If you are on the HCG injection rapid weight loss program, your calorie goal may be around 600 calories a day, which is also split into 2 large meals. Even at 300 calories per meal, the meal consists of a larger serving of meats (4 oz of chicken, 10 oz of vegetables, and 2 large glass of water) to keep you full since you will be eating leaner cuts of meats and fill the tank with plenty of vegetables and water.

So what does meal prepping look like? It takes effort, but you get what you put into it– in the end, it helps you get a step closer to your goal.

Have all your ingredients laid out — lots of lean meats and tons of vegetables.

Green, leafy vegetables like collard greens, turnip greens, mustard greens are low calorie and taste great.

Preparing all the asparagus and broccoli in aluminum foil for grilling.

Summer squash makes another flavorful side dish.  It will serve as a rice/potato/bread substitute.

Roasting sliced tomatoes on a pan and simmering thinly cut beef.

Setting shrimp on the skewers and have chicken tenderloins marinated and ready to grill with several lean burgers.

Shrimp and chicken take no time on the grill.

Overall, the entire process of getting groceries, prepping food, cooking, storing, and cleaning up took 6 hours to make 14 meals for 1 person. But this small sacrifice means that you are done for the week and one step closer to being a better you.

As the summer is winding down, it’s common for us who live in a four season climate to subtly change our lifestyles in negative ways, sometimes regressing to the point of starting over. Whether its reducing our physical activity due to less enjoyable weather, or eating more in response to the chilly temperatures; these behaviors feel natural but contribute to the all-to-common cyclical nature of weight loss/gain. While they may feel natural, it is important to remember that we are not bears, and therefore do not require preparations for hibernation.

There are some things we can do to counter these tendencies however; such as recommitting to calorie counting, or finding new ways to exercise indoors (wherever your schedule permits). Also keep in mind that certain types of foods will have different effects on your appetite, which becomes increasingly important as the seasons are accompanied by certain stables like pies, cookies, cakes, and other assorted sweets. It’s the sugar in these foods that creates the terrible feedback loop of insulin spikes and crashes and their associated cravings. Additionally much of this food is lacking in sufficient amounts of protein to satisfy you appetite.

Now may also be the perfect time to find a gym or start a new exercise routine, finding ways to stay active and engaged with fitness will no doubt help you stave off the consequences of having less time to walk or play outdoors.

Whatever you do, I implore you to take in mind what your goals are for yourself, and if you’ve already made progress hold on to it and don’t let the change of seasons throw you off track. There is no need to wait until the New Year to recommit to getting healthy, keep focused year round; count your calories, move as much as possible, and always remember that weight loss is a marathon rather than a sprint,  just keep plodding forward and you will get there.

We have done this in an effort to better accommodate those with less flexible schedules, however we have found it to cause more confusion than good so we have decided to remove the option from our appointment scheduler.

Don’t worry, this change will not limit the times during which you can come in for B-12 injections but rather you may still come in at any time during which we have regular hours. If our open sign is on, you can come on in for shots.

So to further clarify, no appointments need to be (no can be) made for B-12 injections, appointments are available only for new fills or refills on prescription medications, and only required during non-walk in Physician hours.

HCG injections are a popular, safe, and effective method to lose weight.  Typically, if you follow our meal plan and calorie guidance, you can expect to lose 15-35 lbs a month.  Our HCG diet program may differ from many alternatives in the Pittsburgh area in ways that make the program very flexible. Our HCG program is:

Several FAQs regarding HCG injections

What does your HCG program consist of?
Our program is a 30-day diet plan geared for rapid fat loss.  The 30-day HCG program comes in a 5000 IU vial that you use 125-175 IU daily.  We do not offer drops, since in our experience the most effective HCG protocol is by injection. This injection is given using a tiny needle that goes just beneath the skin.  The needle is about as thin as a fishing line and ⅓ inch long.

I really would like to try the HCG program to jumpstart my weight loss, but I am not comfortable with needles.  How do I know that I can perform the injections myself?
The needles we use are ultra-fine insulin syringes, and so you should barely feel the injection. Above is a video to demonstrate how simple it can be for you to perform the injection.  Also, we would be more than happy to walk you through an actual demonstration with sterile water when you come by the clinic.

What are the side effects?
HCG shots are generally very well tolerated.  During the first couple of days, a few people may experience morning nausea and irritability, similar to other methods involving calorie-restrictions; however, if you quickly consume 15-20 grams of simple carbohydrates, you will find quick relief of these symptoms.
For women who have heavier menstrual cycle, you may experience more intense symptoms associated with your flow, such as cramping and slightly heavier bleeding.  This may be alleviated by avoiding HCG use during 3-4 days of your menstrual cycle.  In fact, we recommend to abstain from HCG use during the heavier days of your cycle for the same reasons.

What are the benefits beside rapid weight loss?
Proper usage in the morning will increase your energy and suppress hunger.  This effect is maximized when you follow our simple dietary instructions of eating unprocessed foods.  You will feel “normal” while on a calorie restriction for rapid fat loss without symptoms of fatigue or starvation.

What can I do to maximize my success on the HCG program?
Besides following our basic instructions on diet and hydration, most people choose to add phentermine along with a combination of B-12 & Fat Burner/Lipotrophic shots.  The phentermine (Adipex) works synergistically with HCG to provide the best result.  We have had many clients described this particular combination as “easy”.

Will I gain the weight back after I lose it?
We are not in control of your appetite or behavior and so we can make no guarantees, however we aim to provide you with the necessary tool and guidance to keep off the weight that you lose.  We can assure you that if you are smaller frame, you will continue to lose weight eating double the calories of the prescribed HCG diet (1200-1600 calories a day), or under 2500 calories/day for the large frame bodies.  In summary, through proper counseling and guidance, you will keep the weight off and continue to lose more fat if you make an active effort in improving your health and well-being.

Holiday Hours 2016


We are opening normal hours Weds-Fri 12p- 6p.  Dr. Cooper will be in on Weds. 2p-4p and Fri. 2p-6p for new patient evaluations and refill on diet medications.  We are closed on Sat. 12/24/2016 for Christmas Eve.

Our hours during the week of New Years are normal.  Weds-Fri 12p- 6p, and Sat. 10a-3p.
