We all know how important exercise is and the impact it has on our mental, physical and emotional health.  So often we at Elevation Medical Weight Loss hear that people can’t exercise for one reason or another.  Some think they are too large, too old, too feeble, the list goes on and on…excuses, excuses. Thankfully, there is something most of us can do and we do it every day, without even thinking…WALKING.

Did you know that walking at least 15 minutes every day can add up to 7 years to your life?  We suggest if you are able to do more, challenge yourself with a vigorous walk whenever you can.  If you have trouble physically walking for a while, just getting up and moving can make a difference!

Here are some benefits of walking every day:

pexels-photo-215699 (Medium)

  • Walking boosts your mood.  Walking just 12 minutes results in increase attentiveness
  • Walking can improve cognitive performance
  • Walking can lower your blood pressure
  • Walking can help prevent or control diabetes.  Women, in particular, who walk at least 30 minutes daily decrease their risk of diabetes by 30%.
  • Walking has proven to be effective at shrinking dangerous abdominal fat linked to diabetes.
  • Walking can help reduce pain and improve mobility

When you are walking, here are some tips to make the most out of your stroll:

  • Swing your arms. Bend at 90 degrees and pump from shoulders. This allows for a quicker pace and provides a workout for your upper body.
  • Wear comfortable shoes.  Look for flexible soles and stiff heels, or any cushioned, lightweight, and low-heeled shoe.  Try to avoid stiff-soled shoes that don’t bend.
  • Make sure your posture is correct.
  • Pick the right pace.  To burn more calories, you should be walking at least 3-5 mph.  Take smaller, faster steps to speed up.
  • Try small hills, up and down steps for a more fat-blasting workout!

The smallest of things can help you walk more.  If you have to take public transit, get off before your destination and walk the rest of the way.  If you can, try taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Walk after lunch instead of sitting and chatting with co-workers. Walk your dog or a friend’s dog.  Put your phone in the next room so that you have to get up to answer it.  Same with the remote, put it by the TV.

The benefits of walking daily are astronomical, as it positively effects both your mental and physical state, leaving your mind and body happier and much healthier.

So grab your sneakers and your music and start moving those legs! Your body will thank you!

Before & After Photos for Donna

Dear Dr. Cooper,

I wanted to share with you my weight loss story which would have never been possible without you and your amazing staff at Elevation Weight Loss of Weirton.

I came to you on a Friday afternoon in March of 2017 (the 10th).  I was so discouraged after having tried everything from Weight Watchers to a personal nutritionist and trainer and spending an amount of money that I do not care to remember.   My weight on March 10, 2017 was 206 pounds.  I was exhausted all of the time, depressed, and very uncomfortable.

On previous programs, I would loose a little bit of weight, even up to 30 /35 pounds and then quicker than I lost the weight, it would come right back.

I decided after speaking with a few people that your program might be a final chance for me.  I was embarrassed with my situation, as a teacher and educated woman, that I could not conquer this weight issue on my own.

I can honestly say that you and your staff made me feel so comfortable and listened to my story with so much compassion and understanding.

I started with the HCG Diet injections.  Within the first weeks I was seeing weight loss.  After two months on injections, I switched to the Diet Medication and I continued to see the pounds drop.

I additionally came in for the B12 injections to help with my inflammation and this was finally a program that was successful for me.

The nutritional guidance that Dr. Cooper and her staff gave to me was invaluable.  Combining the programs medication, nutritional program and the exercise guidance, I was finally in control of my weight.  By mid April I had lost 25 pounds and was down to 178.  By June I was 160 pounds and today I am maintaining at 3 pounds below my goal weight at 142 pounds.   64 pounds and nine (9) inches less in my waist later plus  six (6) months of hard work, dedication and amazing support and I feel fantastic.

I cannot thank you enough for allowing me to be back in control of my life.  I recently traveled to Barcelona, Spain and walked an average of 25 miles each day.   I bicycled along the Mediterranean for two (2) hours and never was even out of breath or tired.  I am enjoying shopping for clothes again and I have regained my confidence.

Thank you doesn’t seem enough for all that you have done for me and my family.  I cannot ever thank you enough.  I continue to visit Elevation for B 12 shots to be sure that I am staying on my maintenance program.  I cannot stress enough that it was a challenge, however, one that was well worth achieving.

If anyone is in the situation that I was in March, I would encourage them to come to Elevation and Dr. Cooper and trust in this program.

Thank you,
Donna

me-2

I started this journey on a whim on May 1st, 2017 weighing 235 pounds. What killed me the most is that I weighed more than when I was pregnant with my twins 19 years ago, and they weighed 7 lbs 5 oz each. I had a hysterectomy in 2005 after which my weight just continued to increase. I have never dieted nor exercised more than walking on a trail. I have a very happy marriage and my husband has never complained about my weight, but I just became comfortable with being so overweight.  To celebrate almost any occasion we would go out to dinner, which was a large part of the problem.

I was very nervous going into my first appointment at the Elevation Medical Weight Loss clinic but the doctor was very understanding and gave me a plan.  This has became more than a just diet, but a new way of life. I now look at EVERY single label, whereas before I never even glanced at food labels.  I couldn’t believe the amount of calories and carbs in some of the drinks and foods I was consuming every day.

At my first appointment I rattled off a goal weight number, which I never really expected to see. Now, here I am on Sept 21st, 2017, just 4 and 1/2 months later and I have reached my goal weight of 180 pounds. I have lost 7 inches from around my waist, and can now fit into regular size clothing instead of plus size.  When I take selfies with my friends, I can hold the phone down instead of way up in the air to get a slimmer angle. I can now walk flights of stairs that before left me completely out of breath, I even stepped outside of my comfort zone and started beat boxing with friends and actually love doing it!  If I can do this and make it work, anyone can.   I not only did this for myself but for our 4 sons, since I have found that a healthy mom is a happy mom. We still celebrate by going out to dinner, only now I am much more conscious of my choices and my order has far fewer calories and carbs.

Meal Planning for Weight Loss Success

When you decide to live a healthier lifestyle and talk to us about wanting to lose weight,   we discuss the nutritional aspect of the types of foods in order to help you choose a weight loss program to fit your goals.  We further recommend that you set a plan for your meals as a way to more easily stay on task and get to your goals.

One aspect of dieting that we would like to emphasize is setting aside a day to plan ahead for your week’s meals.   This includes getting groceries for the week (preferably) from the list of foods that we recommend), prepping the necessary items to make the meals, and cooking ALL of the food needed for the week. If you have 12 containers, you can lay it all out and partition each meal in each container.  Since we often recommend eating 2 large meals a day, you can plan ahead for the other 6 days of the week.

The 9 days meal plan that we prescribed consists of larger meal portions.  Depending on if you are taking the diet medications (phentermine, or Adipex) for weight loss, your caloric goal may be 800-1300 calories a day split into 2 large meals.  If you are on the HCG injection rapid weight loss program, your calorie goal may be around 600 calories a day, which is also split into 2 large meals. Even at 300 calories per meal, the meal consists of a larger serving of meats (4 oz of chicken, 10 oz of vegetables, and 2 large glass of water) to keep you full since you will be eating leaner cuts of meats and fill the tank with plenty of vegetables and water.

So what does meal prepping look like? It takes effort, but you get what you put into it– in the end, it helps you get a step closer to your goal.

Have all your ingredients laid out — lots of lean meats and tons of vegetables.

Green, leafy vegetables like collard greens, turnip greens, mustard greens are low calorie and taste great.

Preparing all the asparagus and broccoli in aluminum foil for grilling.

Summer squash makes another flavorful side dish.  It will serve as a rice/potato/bread substitute.

Roasting sliced tomatoes on a pan and simmering thinly cut beef.

Setting shrimp on the skewers and have chicken tenderloins marinated and ready to grill with several lean burgers.

Shrimp and chicken take no time on the grill.

This is what a 300 calories meal look like

Overall, the entire process of getting groceries, prepping food, cooking, storing, and cleaning up took 6 hours to make 14 meals for 1 person. But this small sacrifice means that you are done for the week and one step closer to being a better you.

I recently stumbled across a video that immediately brought to mind a myriad of questions that get brought up by our weight loss patients. While we tend to focus on calorie counting during consultations, we often don’t have the chance to really dig into too much detail different types of foods. While there are many reasons that most of our food suggestions are “whole foods,” (by which I mean meals for which you buy ingredients and prepare yourself) the most important reason is the accuracy with which you can count calories.

As the following video, originally posted by the NY Times and author Casey Neistat, shows nutritional content labels on prepackaged foods are notoriously inaccurate. Using apps and journals is only as effective as the information that you input, so be careful as you count your calories and remember, if the nutritional content seems too good to be true, and you didn’t weigh out the ingredients yourself, there is a good chance that it is in fact not true.

Full credit to Author Casey Neistat and the NY Times Opdocs for the video content.

I don’t want this information to induce a calorie counting panic attack for our more meticulous patients, just be aware that if you want the tightest possible control over you Calories In/ Calories Out ratio, you will be better served making your own foods. Also, if you are trying your best and not seeing progress you might want to take a closer look at the details of the food you are consuming, you may actually be eating more than you think, and that’s not necessarily your fault.
