This week we have another article of “housekeeping” so please bear with us. We want to take this time to address how we handle the privacy of our patients so as to better protect your sensitive medical information and so that you know what to do if you have questions or concerns regarding your information.

2018-05-06.jpg

MaiLan and Remy take their privacy very seriously.

As it stands, we are bound by HIPAA (the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996) which puts limits in place not only on how we store and handle your information but also whom may have access to said information, but we also have our own policies in place to help provide more peace of mind to our patients.

As many of you know, when we receive a new patient we request a copy of their photo ID in order to ensure that the patient is who they say they are, we then place a copy of this ID in our patient files so that we are always able to confirm identification on follow up visits. In addition to this, we regularly search and provide updates to statewide databases in order to make sure that 1) there is no unknown medical history that could create a risk for our patients, and 2) no one is using our patients’ information to unlawfully obtain and abuse medications.

Lastly, we are not permitted, nor would we want to, discuss our patients with ANYONE outside of our medical staff and the patient themselves, not even to other physicians. If a patient and/or their primary physician (PCP) need us to communicate with a third party, we require that the patient signs a “release form” specifically indicating the scope of such communication. In fact, we will not even confirm that an individual is a patient of ours without such documentation, this is to protect your privacy. Signing such a release does not indicate anything other than your willingness to allow our prescribers to communicate with the person you identify, typically your primary physician, and does not constitute the admission that you are a patient of ours or that you received any medications from our office.

hipaa-patient-privacy

We apologize for the dry nature of this weeks article, however questions have been asked about our policies and we want to express just how fundamentally important it is to us that our patients are protected and receive the best possible medical care.

Spring Cleaning Your Health

sping

Spring means new beginnings, fresh starts and reorganizing.  When we think of spring several things usually come to mind:

  • flowers
  • warmer weather
  • being outdoors, and
  • spring cleaning -yuck!

The idea of spring cleaning is something that you either dread or very much look forward to. It also doesn’t have to apply just your home or office, it’s actually a great time for re-organizing your life.

By this time of year most of us have given up on our new year’s resolutions however, you don’t have to wait until 2019 to start back up.

Don’t overwhelm yourself with a whole tear down, instead start small and work your way to the bigger things.  Decluttering is a perfect way to start.

  • Go to your closet, and throw out your “fat” clothes. Don’t give yourself a reason to get back into your old habits; if an item is more than 1 size too big you no longer have any use for it.  Thrift it or gift it!
  • Go to your pantry.  Pull out all expired foods and throw them away.  Get rid of the “junk” you bought in a moment of weakness.  Give it to someone who would enjoy it, or put it in your office break room (this works especially well for people engaged in workplace weight loss competitions).
  • It’s time to throw out that Christmas candy. Really! You don’t need it and it’s probably getting a little gross.
  • Stress, even small amounts of it, can be very unhealthy for you and sometimes you will make poor food choices because of it.  People can feel compelled to eat when you are happy when you are sad or, most commonly, when you are stressed. Even the small things can help manage your stress level, many of us use several different social media websites which can become far more stressful than relaxing. Unfriend dramatic people on your lists. You will be surprised how enjoyable your social media time will become by comparison.
  • Turn your spring cleaning into spring training!  Why not turn your deep cleaning into a workout? Crank up the music and do squats while holding a bucket of cleaning supplies. Squat to put things into your lower cupboards. Do lunges while vacuuming or mopping.  Every little bit helps.

imagesTHVVLMQD

Most importantly, spring is the perfect time to come out of your winter hibernation.  Dust off your walking shoes and just start moving a little at a time. Need some extra energy to get you started? Stop by our office forget a B-12 shot, if you are dieting or just not eating perfectly, the extra B-12 can make all the difference.  Any adult can get one– any time that we are open, just come right in and we will be there to help.

Feeling Hungry? Here’s How to Make Sure Your Appetite STAYS Suppressed

We often receive questions or comments regarding the effectiveness of using phentermine for weight loss.  Phentermine, also known as Adipex, works very well to control hunger; however, the results are still based on you and your motivation to eat healthier and your ability to stick to the plan.

After taking phentermine for several months, you may notice that the appetite suppressant effect does not seem as strong as it was for the first few weeks.  This diminishing effect is due to your body becoming acclimated to the medication.  So the question is: How do you make the appetite suppressant keep working for longer?

Here are some suggestions– based on your doctor’s approval:

  • Ask your doctor if you should take the whole tablet of phentermine in one dose rather than half a tablet twice a day.
  • Take the medication later during the day, 2 hrs before you are likely to be hungry, however not too late during the day which may inhibit sleep.
  • Consider doing weight lifting exercises instead of cardio. Cardio tends to stimulate appetite while weight lifting help suppresses appetite for many people.DSC_0843
  • Add on the B-12 and fat burner injections if you have not already done so. The B-12 and other components can make it easier for you to maintain your diet
  • Keep snacks away and do not have things around the house (or office!) that you really enjoy eating.
  • Drink more water. A gallon a day is best. When you find yourself hungry, drink a glass of water and wait 30 minutes to see if you are actually thirsty instead of hungry.
  • Consider consolidating your meals into a 6 hr window during the day, like during 2p-8p. This known as intermittent fasting and when used properly can be very effective for helping certain people regulate or “reset” their appetite.
  • Consider trying the other manufacturer/brand of phentermine.  Different companies use different dyes or binding agents as part of the inactive ingredients that may work better for certain individuals.  The pills look slightly different from each other, but the active ingredient is still entirely phentermine 37.5 mg.
  • Get more sleep. A lack of good sleep increases the release of a stress hormone, known as cortisol, that will cause you to eat more. Also, it’s hard to eat when you are asleep so it’s a win-win.
    remsleeps
  • Take at least a 1-week break from phentermine (and other stimulants, such as caffeine, if you can handle it).  This allows your body to reset so the medication is new to you again.

These are just a few strategies to help you get the most out of the medication and better take control of your eating habits. Hopefully, something here will help you on your way to a healthier you.

7 Diet Tips on Breaking the Weight Loss Plateau

Whether you have been losing weight for a few months or a few years, if your weight loss has recently stalled there are some things you can try to get things moving again.  Here are a few tips on how to break the plateau and start achieving results again:

  1. Increase protein intake.  Try to aim for 75 gram of protein for women and 150 gram of protein for men.  Lean protein shakes are OK to supplement your intake.
    steakprotein
  2. If you haven’t already started tracking calories, start using an app like MyPlate Calorie Tracker for iPhone or Android.
  3. Get more sleep.  Most people need at least 7 hours of sleep a night, and more so if you exercise. Lack of sleep throws off hormones like cortisol which make it harder to shed stubborn fat.
    cat-sleeps.jpeg
  4. Start a weight training program.  By increasing the calories you burn all day a weight lifting program may very well help you start losing again.  If you are inexperienced, you can start by doing body-weight exercises and working your way up.
    weights
  5. Drink more water.  We recommend a gallon of water (128 oz) daily for most patients.  This is important both if you take our appetite suppressant medication or doing the HCG injections.  You are allowed to have unsweetened tea or sugar-free water flavor packets, such as Crystal Lite, or another low-calorie flavored option.
    water
  6. Consider adding on the B-12 and Fat Burner (Lipotropic) injections and check-in weekly for some feedback.  If you are low in Vitamin B or certain amino acids, it can cause you to stall on your progress.  Also, by visiting for weekly weigh-ins, we can provide some suggestions on how you can continue to lose.
  7. Lastly, try to have a nice meal.  Some people find that by going high calories for a day, especially after 6-8 weeks of intense calorie deficit, they will start losing again.  A reason for your plateau may very well be that your body just needs a “refeed”.

Hopefully, these 7 tips can offer some help.  Let us know what works for you!

Dear Patients of Elevation Medical Weight Loss,

We need to take some time to address something rather serious. Concerns have been brought to us about some our patients possibly “sharing” their weight loss medications with friends and family. While we are confident that all of our weight loss medications and programs are safe, this is not necessarily true for all people and as such we are concerned for the health of anyone involved.

Before we go on, we want to note that all new patients sign a “Statement of Informed Consent” that states among other things that our prescribers have the discretion to withhold prescribing to anyone suspected of sharing or giving away prescribed medication. We do, however, want to be clear that our top priority is your safety and the safety of those dear to you. Our prescribers have in the past and will undoubtedly turn away seemingly healthy, adult patients due to risk factors that could easily lead to terrible side effects, but have also found alternative ways to successfully work with more high-risk patients. The point is that a prescriber should always be involved when a prescription medication is taken to ensure that the medication is taken both effectively and safely.

notsharingiscaring2.jpeg

If you or someone you know has or is currently sharing your medications with another person, we urge you to please stop doing so and instead bring them to us and let one of our trained medical professionals make sure that everything is done safely. If cost is an issue we have run many special incentives in the past such as our “buddy program” that can help in this regard, and if it is anything feel free to contact us to address them and possibly discuss safer alternatives.

Again, this letter is not intended as a threat or scolding, but rather as a plea. All of us at Elevation Medical Weight Loss make great efforts to protect your privacy and your health, and we ask that you work with us to ensure that we have only a positive impact on our community.

TL;DR No one should share any prescribed medications since there could be serious risks if someone takes a medication that is not meant for them.

Sincerely,

Coach Drew and Dr. Cooper

DUE TO THE OVERWHELMING RESPONSE TO OUR “BRING A BUDDY” PROGRAM…WE HAVE DECIDED TO EXTEND IT THROUGH JUNE!

We are thrilled that so many of you have decided to take advantage of our “Buddy” program! Our first two winners in our Weirton office were brand new patients~

Just to refresh your memory, below are the rules for the “Bring a Buddy” program!

ONE DAY OR DAY ONE…YOU DECIDE …AND BRING A BUDDY!

diet buddies

January has come and gone and many of us are stuck with ye another yet of New Years Resolutions.  The number one New Year’s resolution is…you guessed it…get in shape and/or lose weight. 69% of us make that resolution every year and those who don’t usually start thinking about summer and joining in around now. How many times have you made that promise to yourself?

We try to be here for our patients, but for most of your success, it is entirely up to you. We also know that it can sometimes be hard to lose weight and that a support system can make a world of difference. This is why we are extending the “Bring a Buddy” plan for you with some exciting incentives.

Here is what you need to do:

-You can be a former of a new patient, it does not matter.
-If you are a former patient, you have to be ready for a refill on your meds.
-Bring a buddy with you, you both must get a prescription for meds, HCG, or sermorelin
Both people must physically be present at the time of the appointment.

Here is what you get:

-Each person will get $10.00 off of their medications
-Each person will get a complimentary B-12 injection
-Both of your names will get entered into a drawing at the end of the month to win a free weight scale (like ours in the office) and a credit toward a month of medications and shots.*

*There will be 1 winner at each office each month.  Drawings will take place on the last day each month from January 2018, through June 2018.  The winners’ first names only will be posted on the website and Facebook page.  All offices will be included in this incentive program. No cash or cash equivalent will be substituted for the end of month awards. If you do not want the shots, no cash equivalent will be given.  i.e. You don’t use it, you lose it.

One day or day one?  WE will decide…This is your DAY ONE!  Make it count…with your buddy!

Congrats to our February winners: Paige at our Weirton office and Wenda at our Green Tree office!

Bloating and Water Retention

eat less salt

Did you ever wake up and feel like you were bloated or retaining water? The first things to consider is whether or not you’ve had too much salt.  Excess salt can make your body, which in turn can raise your blood pressure.  The higher your blood pressure, the greater the strain on your heart, arteries, kidneys, and brain. Over the long term, this can lead to any number of conditions such as heart attacks, strokes, dementia, and kidney disease, not to mention, obesity.

Many think that if you don’t literally put salt on something, that it is healthy to eat. What you may not know, is that many of the foods and drinks already have a high sodium (salt) content. Certain “hyper-palatable ” (fancy word for processed and tasty) foods that you might not even think of as “salty” can be loaded with sugar AND sodium. Some possible issues to address when you are are eating and drinking things that leave you bloated or swollen.

Not drinking enough water

More than likely, you are drinking too little water. When you’re dehydrated, your blood vessels enlarge, leading to a swollen stomach, face, and even hands and ankles. To avoid waking up as a human balloon, drink a tall glass of water at night before you hop into bed, and kick off your day with some water (preferably with lemon).

You are consuming too much artificial sweetener

The reason artificial sweeteners don’t have any (significant) calories is because 1) they actually taste sweeter than regular sugar but more importantly 2) they can specifically bypass absorption in your small intestine and instead go straight to your colon, where they ferment with the gut bacteria — leaving you with gas and a bloated tummy.

Eating too fast

If you’re the kind of person who speeds through meals, you might be dealing with a swollen abdomen from time to time, due both to overeating and swallowing more air with your food as you chomp down. Take your full lunch hour to chew slowly and actually enjoy that sandwich of yours.

Drinking Alcohol

Going hard on alcohol can also be a culprit for various swollen body parts. Drinking a lot of alcohol, especially the heavier options such as beer and wine, are very similar to eating a large, rich meal. This makes you and your stomach feel very full. Excessive amounts of alcohol also tear up the lining of your stomach, which leads to inflammation, then bloating.

–  Eating processed foods

Although tasty, TV dinners, canned soup or vegetables, condiments, and sauces can cause bloating. These are among the “hyper-palatable” food I mentioned earlier that contain a high amount of sodium and cause the body to retain more water.  This often happens because our bodies are trying to dilute salt to maintain a balance of electrolytes.

Eating fast food

Just like other processed foods, fast food options tend to be loaded with sodium.  That’s how they manage to be so fast. They are preserved and it allows you to get your food in a very short amount of time. Many times, the food is already made or processed and that is why it takes such a short amount of time.

Carbs, carbs…and more carbs

Pasta, bagels, cereal, rice and other foods that have a high amount of carbohydrates tend to cause your body to store three times more water compared to protein.  Instead of loading up on carbs, add more lean proteins like chicken breast or salmon.

Carbonated drinks

Pop, fizzy water or other carbonated beverages can also cause excessive bloating. If you’re hooked on your daily Diet Coke, you may also want to leave the can open before drinking it, or gently shake it to let out some carbonation. Adding ice can also cut carbonation.

It seems like there is nothing left to eat. Not true. Low salt foods or salt substitute spices are in many things. There are actually foods that help you get rid of your bloating and swollen.

swollen

So, what relieves bloating? Eating vegetables cooked versus raw actually reduces the amount of gas your body produces while digesting. The process of cooking breaks down some of the tough fibers so your body doesn’t have to.  Studies have found that garlic stimulates digestion. It is also considered an antifungal, antiviral and antibacterial food that can help our bodies break down foods that lead to gas. Drinking water will help you flush excess salt in your body while keeping things moving. The more water you drink, the better.

Studies have found, also, that drinking ginger, peppermint or fennel tea helps reduce bloating as well. You can take these in herbal supplement forms, but it is best to consult a doctor before you do.

Fresh chicken and salmon are also great for digestion, not to mention, less sodium.

And let’s not forget exercise. Getting your heart rate up can help flush out the toxins in your body that have been stagnant for a while. Yoga is a good place to start, as it’s known to deflate many different swollen parts of your body, including your feet, legs, and abdomen.

Even if certain foods don’t have a lot of calories, check out the sodium content and be aware that your body may be storing all of that fluid, which, in turn, will make you feel bloated, and weigh more. If you are seeing slower results than you like, following these tips may make the difference for you. You don’t have to eat perfectly to benefit from a better understanding of “healthy eating”, being aware of the effects of excess sodium can help you moderate your eating where needed to avoid them.
